Where Angers stand now the window has shut

Angers SCO did what Angers SCO does: survive in Ligue 1 on one of the division's smallest budgets, finishing the 2025-26 season in thirteenth place. But the summer that followed was anything but routine for the black-and-whites. Coach Alexandre Dujeux, the architect of those against-the-odds survivals, left for Lorient, and the club appointed Stéphane Gilli — the coach who took Paris FC up to Ligue 1 — as his successor. The finances had been given a boost earlier in the year, too, when Angers sold a young forward to Fenerbahçe in February 2026 in the biggest sale in the club's history. Some of that was reinvested with typical pragmatism. Branco van den Boomen, the Dutch playmaker who once ran Ligue 2 with Toulouse, had arrived on loan from Ajax in January and was signed permanently on 11 July, tied to the club until 2029; Usman Simbakoli returned to the club that trained him, joining from Belgian side RWDM Brussels; and Anthony Bermont arrived on a season-long loan from Lens without an option to buy. The market closed on 1 September, and Gilli now has his squad for the year: twenty-six players, three goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders and eight forwards, chasing the same objective as always — a fourth straight season in the elite.

The windfall is spent — now live with the squad

That record February sale gave Angers something the club rarely has: real money and real choices. The temptation after a windfall is to upgrade everywhere at once; the Angers way has always been the opposite — spend little, recruit smart free agents and hungry profiles from smaller leagues, and rely on collective organisation to out-fight richer squads. Making van den Boomen's loan permanent was the recipe in miniature: proven quality, converted on modest terms. Now that the market has closed, the fan debate shifts from what to buy to what has actually been built. The shape is striking. Eight forwards and nine defenders sit either side of a midfield of only six, which is a lot of trust placed in a small engine room across a long season — is that a bold statement of intent from Gilli, or the thinnest area of the whole squad? Which survivors of the Dujeux years fit what Gilli wants, and which have given what they had? Does Bermont's loan look like a starter or squad cover? And if January comes with the club again looking over its shoulder, where should the money go?
