Lens's historic season — and the squad it produced

No club came out of last season with a better story than RC Lens. The Sang et Or finished second in Ligue 1 with 70 points, their best league campaign in decades, and on 23 May 2026 they beat OGC Nice 3-1 at the Stade de France to lift the Coupe de France — the first in the club's history after three lost finals, the last of them back in 1998. The reward is a return to the Champions League, but success came with a price: coach Pierre Sage was recruited by Crystal Palace, and Lens responded by appointing German coach Dino Toppmöller, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt, on a contract to 2028, bringing genuine European experience to the bench. Recruitment moved quickly over the summer, and the finished article is a 30-man squad: four goalkeepers, thirteen defenders, six midfielders and seven attackers. Midfielder Yacine Titraoui, veteran playmaker Thorgan Hazard and Polish winger M. Skóraś all signed and are all in the final group. The Champions League depth question, now answered

The tension in Lens's summer was simple to state and hard to solve: a squad good enough to finish second over 34 league games now has to survive Ligue 1 plus the Champions League. Abdulhamid and the rest give Toppmöller every combination he could want, and also guarantee that several of them barely play. Against that, six midfielders and seven attackers look almost lean by comparison: F. Sotoca, F. Thauvin, O. Édouard, T. Hazard, A. Sima, F. Ivanović and J. Kadile up front, with M. Cuisance, A. Haidara, Y. Titraoui and M. Skóraś among those asked to control games on two fronts. So the fan debate has moved on.
