Lens's historic season — and what it changes
No club enters this window with a better story than RC Lens. The Sang et Or finished second in Ligue 1 with 70 points, their best league campaign in decades, and on 23 May 2026 they beat OGC Nice 3-1 at the Stade de France to lift the Coupe de France — the first in the club's history after three lost finals, the last of them back in 1998. The reward is a return to the Champions League, but success came with a price: coach Pierre Sage was recruited by Crystal Palace, and Lens responded by appointing German coach Dino Toppmöller, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt, on a contract to 2028, bringing genuine European experience to the bench. The recruitment has been active and sensibly priced: midfielder Michaël Cuisance arrived from Hertha Berlin for a reported €5 million on a deal to 2030, Polish centre-back Maik Nawrocki signed from Celtic for four seasons, and right-back Saud Abdulhamid's loan from Roma was turned into a permanent transfer reported at €3.5 million, through 2029. The window closes on 1 September; the league restarts on 23 August, with a European group stage to follow. For a promoted-from-overachiever club, the squad math just changed completely.
The Champions League depth question
The tension in Lens's summer is simple to state and hard to solve: a squad good enough to finish second over 34 league games now needs to survive Ligue 1 plus the Champions League, and several of last season's contributors have already left. Adrien Thomasson joined Stade Rennais, Allan Saint-Maximin moved to MLS side Charlotte FC, and Malang Sarr and Wesley Saïd are also officially gone. Every one of those departures frees wages and minutes — but each also removes proven Ligue 1 quality just as the fixture list doubles in difficulty. That makes this the perfect squad for a keep-or-sell debate. Does the cup-winning core deserve blanket protection, or should Lens cash in on players whose value peaked with the trophy? Are the new signings — Cuisance, Nawrocki, Abdulhamid — starters or depth? And which academy or rotation players are ready for a Champions League bench? Toppmöller's arrival adds another layer, since a new coach's system always suits some profiles better than others.
