Where Monaco ended up for 2026-27

AS Monaco's 2025-26 season ended in genuine disappointment: seventh place with 54 points, which means no European football on the Rock for the first time in years. For a club whose whole model — big squad value, young talents, Champions League revenue — assumes continental football, that miss shaped everything about the summer. The response started on the bench: Monaco dismissed Sébastien Pocognoli and appointed Filipe Luis, the Brazilian coach and former Atlético Madrid full-back, on a contract to 2028. The market itself showed a club reshaping rather than panicking. Defender Sadibou Sané arrived from Metz, left-back Flavio Nazinho joined from Cercle Brugge, and 19-year-old winger Mathys Detourbet — sold by Troyes to Manchester City — landed in the principality on loan. Going the other way, Kassoum Ouattara was sold to Beşiktaş and Caio Henrique joined Ajax, while Ansu Fati's loan spell was turned into a permanent transfer at the end of June, keeping the Barcelona forward at the club on a deal to 2030. The window has closed and the shape is set: 24 players, with two goalkeepers, eight defenders, seven midfielders and seven forwards, and no European fixtures to spread them across.

Life after Akliouche, now that it is real

The dossier that hung over Monaco's summer was settled before the deadline: Maghnes Akliouche, the academy-made playmaker and the squad's most valuable asset, officially signed for Paris Saint-Germain in early August. Monaco's model has always leaned on cashing in at peak value and reinvesting across the squad, and that sale is the model in its purest form — but the reinvesting is finished now, and Filipe Luis has to make the numbers work as they are. The balance is unusual: seven midfielders against eight defenders in a 24-man group, several of them very young, in a season with one game a week and no continental distraction.
