A season of two faces, and the squad it produced

No club in France lived a stranger 2025-26 than OGC Nice. In the league, the Aiglons finished sixteenth with just 32 points and had to go through the relegation play-off to survive — drawing 0-0 at Saint-Étienne before winning the return leg 4-1 at the Allianz Riviera, with a late Elye Wahi double sealing a twenty-fifth consecutive season in the top flight. Yet the same team reached the Coupe de France final, falling 3-1 to Lens at the Stade de France on 23 May. A cup finalist that nearly went down: that contradiction shaped everything that followed. The instability reached the boardroom too. A full sale of the club to an Anglo-Saxon buyer fell through, and Ineos remains at the capital while the ownership structure continues to evolve, with the historic operational management still in place. On the bench, the club turned to Olivier Pantaloni, the experienced coach who had just guided promoted Lorient to a comfortable tenth place — a pragmatist's appointment for a group that needed certainties. He brought veteran midfielder Laurent Abergel, Lorient's long-time captain, with him from Brittany. Earlier, winger Aliou Baldé's move to St. Gallen was made permanent and young midfielder Gabin Bernardeau went to Lorient. What is left is a genuinely lopsided shape, and that is the fun of this board. Twelve midfielders against seven forwards: is that depth Pantaloni can rotate through a long season, or a traffic jam that leaves good players watching from the bench? Does Witsel's experience settle a midfield that lost its way at 32 points, and where does that leave Boudaoui, Sanson and Abergel in the pecking order? Was bringing Wahi back the smartest piece of the window or a short-term fix for the goals Moffi and Cho took with them? Eight defenders in front of three goalkeepers gives Nice a real back line — provided the hierarchy is settled fast.
